34 Phorcus lineatus

Dorsal view of buccal mass and radula after some tissue removed with NaOH solution.
The anterior of the radula has golden brown, fully-developed teeth (1) and rests on an almost invisible hyaline shield (2); edited to make it visible in enlarged inset (3) . The front of the radula is brought into feeding action by powerful muscles protracting/retracting the supporting odontophore. The buccal mass is red (4) with myoglobin which supplies the oxygen required by the muscles. The interior pair of white cartilaginous bolsters (5) are partly exposed by the NaOH.
