01 Leptochiton cancellatus

01 Leptochiton cancellatus

Length 8.6 mm. Elliptical outline; width about 50% of length. Slightly longer than 8 mm maximum length stated by Kaas & Belle (1985). Smallest chiton species in British waters apart from L. scabridus.
Black manganese and rust coloured ferrous deposits.
1: Girdle narrow, so intermediate shell valves occupy 80 to 90% of chiton’s width.
2: Head valve less than semicircle, posterior margin widely V shaped; approximately crescentic.
Closely packed, almost touching, oval granules in chainlike lines running: longitudinally in front (3) of mucro on tail valve and in the jugal (4) and pleural (5) areas of valves ii to vii,
and
radially on head valve (2), behind (6) mucro on tail valve and on lateral areas (7) of valves ii to vii.
Granules eroded on this large old specimen. Orienation of granules (where not eroded) differentiates lateral (radial 7) and pleural (longitudinal5) areas.
8: Peripheral margin of girdle has fringe of ribbed pointed spicules about 0.1 mm long.
Llŷn, North Wales. March 2016.
