31 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

31 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

Species uncertain.
Inversicolor (two broad dark bands) colour form is rare; less than 1% of both species in large, pan British collection (Smith, 1976, in Reid, 1996). Identity uncertain as the penes of similar adults were not examined because the collector (IFS) was unaware of differentiation of the two species in 1971. L. obtusata seems most probable as it is usually the larger species at equivalent growth stages. There were two sets of specimens on this beach with thin spouted juvenile lips. The larger ones, shell heights circa 3.5 to 5mm, included this and other inversicolor specimens. The smaller ones, shell heights 1.5 to 1.7mm, were all reticulata form and probably L. fabalis 32Dof 32 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis .
Rosehearty, Moray coast, Scotland. January, 1971.
