35 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

L. obtusata with worn dingy white spire.
Superficially, the eroded early whorls of this shell resemble the “spirorbid” type spire of some L. fabalis, but it is dingy white with traces of the previous yellow colour instead of the distinctly pure white spire of L. fabalis. Because of variation in weathering and epizooic growth on either species, this feature should not be relied on alone as diagnostic, though a distinct pure white early spire may act as supporting evidence for some L. fabalis.
Menai Strait, North Wales. February 2011.
