43 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

43 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

L. fabalis dwarf form.
Dwarf form from exposed shore (Ballantine scale 3). IFS was uncertain of identity as penes not examined and shell form unfamiliar, but wide experience of Dr Reid enabled him to confirm the identification. Graham (1988) states that “a notch where the outer lip and last whorl meet” is indicative of young L. obtusata. But this does not settle the identification of these as the smallest and largest have no appreciable notch(2), while the middle sized one does (1) . A notch is not a reliable indicator of species (D. Reid, in litt.).
Shell height of largest, 5 mm. Cliffs south of Aberdeen, Scotland. 1971.
