Centre: live occupied shell. Left: removed from shell, mantle intact. Right: mantle removed.
A black mark within the odontophore is visible through the epithelium of the head (1) and the overlying mantle (2, in this case there is also intense pigment on this part of the mantle), and it underlies and adds to the intensity of a patch of black pigment on the translucent shell’s interior (3).
The fine black spray on the mantle (4) over the viscera shows as an amphora shaped shadow (5) through the shell.
The gonads are situated between the viscera and foot, but on juveniles, such as this, and on adults out of breeding condition, they are hidden or nearly so.
