Plants other than Laminaria are sometimes eaten, mainly by juveniles. The juvenile specimen above is eating on the flat frond of Fucus serratus. It is uncertain whether foodplants other than Laminaria and Saccorhiza are adequate for development, as adults are only occasionally found on them. They may be those that have failed to reach Laminaria or have been swept from it in storms.
