The hard iron-mineralized teeth of the radula, about 75% length of shell, enables larger specimens to eat, and excavate caves in, the base of a Laminaria stipe. Adults concealed in holdfasts have little need for camouflage or warning colouration, and are often coated with epizoic growths.
