36 Tritia reticulata

Foot twisted at right angles to normal position. When starfish attack, T. reticulata reacts immediately to first touch by vigorously twisting and turning body and shell in different directions to confuse attacker.  1: slit opening to female ventral pedal gland.

Egg capsules, on emergence, pass along a temporary groove in the foot to the ventral pedal gland which grips it and forms it into flattened brandy bottle shape with one face flat and the other slightly convex, and cements its small base into position.

Shell height 27.6 mm, Dorset, England, April 2012.
