Each spawn mass contains up to 40 unusually large eggs (diameter 0.4 mm) ova. Initially, ova have a bright yellow yolk surrounded by white albumen (1) which becomes colourless (2) as it is consumed. The yellow disappears as the embryos develop within the egg mass (3) and tiny slugs with black eyes in white eye patches can be seen (4) before they emerge when c. 0.7 mm long.
