Main text for set is below image P2 02 Patella shell. Interior of Patella vulgata shell. Length 20.2mm. Specimen chosen for clarity. Many P. vulgata are not as clearly marked or so coloured. .

Parts of mantle (and shell layers secreted by them. See P2 02 Patella shell. Interior of Patella vulgata shell. Length 20.2mm. Specimen chosen for clarity. Many P. vulgata are not as clearly marked or so coloured. )

E: mantle edge (M +3).

S: free mantle skirt (M +2).

G: pallial gills exposed where mantle skirt reflected up. (M +1 secreted by mantle over gills’ attachment to it or immediately adjacent).

PR: pedal retractor muscle /foot-muscle (M, myostracum).

PRA: anterior muscle-bundle, largest bundle of pedal retractor muscle (widest part of M).

V: mantle covering viscera (M -1 and M-2). Digestive gland, immediately below mantle, is thought to shunt pigments derived from plants through mantle into shell [D.R. Lindberg, in litt.]. Pale in parts and slightly translucent, faintly showing viscera on this specimen. On other smaller examined specimens of P. ulyssiponensis this area of mantle was entirely black and opaque.

N: anterior mantle-attachment at edge of mantle covering nuchal cavity (creates thin pallial scar PS).
