06 Semibalanus balanoides

06 Semibalanus balanoides

Growth lines on the opercular valves are obscured by deposits. At low tide, S. balanoides breathes atmospheric air through a micropyle (small gap) in the tergoscutal flaps but, in extremely dessicating conditions, it shuts the micropyle and respires anaerobically. This specimen is opening the flaps to feed as it has just been immersed in water.
