02 Acanthochitona crinita

Length 26 mm (when fully extended). Llŷn, North Wales. March 2016.
Head valve (i) like Napoleonic bicorn hat. Tail valve (viii) very small relative to other valves. Intermediate shell valves (ii to vii) occupy about 55% of chiton’s width. Valves quite thick, but aragonite permeated by canals is brittle so fractures (1) frequent on living specimens, though parts are usually kept in place by the girdle and strong shell musculature.
