06 Lepidochitona cinerea

Ends of valves iii & iv. Tegmentum partly removed to expose canals and underlying articulamentum.
Tegmentum weakened by penetration of aesthete canals, crumbling after 40 years in shell collection; easily rubbed off by wooden cocktail stick in water.

1: remaining part of tegmentum with some of original colour.
2: remaining part of tegmentum with aesthete pits on surface.
3: remains of tegmentum with horizontal aesthete canals exposed.
4: aesthete canals of tegmentum coalesce to pass in canals of slit rays through articulamentum into body. Slit ray canals robust; survived removal of tegmentum.
5: exposed surface of articulamentum with far fewer aesthete canals than tegmentum.
