16 Acanthochitona crinita

Radula 5mm long from chiton 26 mm long. Llŷn, North Wales. March 2016.
Treated with 10% solution NaOH (caustic soda) to remove radular sac. Treatment causes radula to curl.
1: in each row, a pair of major lateral teeth, the principal scrapers, are the most substantial and darkest with hard, iron rich, magnetite.
2: paler, translucent, long, broadly tipped, major (third) uncinal teeth have less mineralization as their function is to sweep up loosened food particles.
3: posterior of radula is where teeth commence formation, colourless as not yet mineralized.
4: anterior of radula flanked by translucent whitish hyaline shield.
