16 Boreochiton ruber

Radula extracted from 14.5 mm long animal. North Yorkshire. September 2014. (leg. Paula Lightfoot).
Broad ribbon-like radula resting on odontophore.

1: complex of muscle bundles for operating mouth parts and radula.

2: hyaline shield (wide translucent anterior border of radula) overlying the supporting cartilaginous pink odontophore. Odontophore is protruded from mouth like a tongue to operate radula when feeding.

3: major lateral teeth, black at anterior of radula, permeated with extremely-hard magnetite, a magnetic mineral of iron. (Fine dissection requires alloy or ceramic forceps to avoid radula adhering to them.)

4: major lateral teeth, paler at posterior of radula as recently formed and not yet fully mineralized with magnetite.

5: marginal teeth, golden as mineralized at anterior of radula.

6: marginal teeth, colourless as not yet fully formed or mineralized at posterior of radula.
