The girdle is tough thick tissue that surrounds the valves of chitons. In Acanthochitona crinita the dorsal aspect of the girdle (perinotum) is covered with unaligned, short, straight spines that are spatulate and slightly ribbed distally, with some longer curved spines [not shown on image] .
