18 Atalodoris sparsa COMPARE Atalodoris inconspicua

Spawn masses of A. inconspicua (on left) and A. sparsa (on right).

Both species deposit a ribbon of spawn, attached edge-on, in the form of a polygyrous, unconvoluted, tightly-coiled spiral of about seven coils on Cellepora pumicosa and Porella concinna. Without sight of the depositing adult, it is doubtful whether the spawns of this pair of species can be differentiated.

Some other dorid species that eat and lay on encrusting bryozoans, such as Atalodoris pusilla and Idaliadoris depressa also have similar spawn, but in most cases the species of bryozoan used differs from those used by A. sparsa.
