28 Marsenia perspicua

28 Marsenia perspicua

Egg capsules embedded in colonial ascidian.

1: top view of yellow ova seen through translucent lid of capsule.
2: lateral view of capsule; neck with adhering ascidian raised into a pronounced rim as insufficient depth in encrusting colonial ascidian for height of capsule, which may also result in a flattened base on the capsule (see image 27).
3: smaller egg capsule; may be recently inserted and yet to expand by absorption of water. Possibly from the smaller species L. latens, but none of that species was observed at this site/date where L. perspicua and its egg capsules were common on both unitary and colonial ascidians.
