08 Emarginula fissura

08 Emarginula fissura

Pleated outer lips of the snout expanded widely to help retain food particles loosened by the radula. The thickened mantle edge extends with small sensory papillae to the ends of the furrows on the reverse of the external ridges of the shell (1). Epipodial tentacles (2) extend beyond the shell to detect approach of enemies (one edited, 3, to make visible to edge of foot).
Any mud that enters the shell is passed forwards between mantle and foot to be expelled from the dorsal exhalant siphon.
L. 5.8 mm, W. 4.6 mm, H. 3.2 mm, Menai Strait, Wales, March 2015.
