The parietal lip consists of a wide glazed area (1) formed by the mantle on the body whorl, but is often difficult to discern (2).
On dead stranded shells the periostracum often peels off and the colour bleaches to whitish; the glaze on the parietal lip may protect its periostracum from erosion (1).
