13 Littorina littorea

Habitat. N. Wirral, Cheshire, England. June 2011.
L. littorea is common on these stones. It is able to crawl across and feed on the intervening mud and sand, but needs the stones as a stable refuge when covered by the tide. Apart from L. saxatilis s.s. on the vertical sea wall, and Peringia ulvae on the mud, no other gastropods live here.
