23 Lacuna vincta

23 Lacuna vincta

When extended, the foot anterior of the mesopodial groove (1-1) (see) elongates well beyond the snout and retains its well rounded propodium (2).
L. vincta travels with a jerky bipedal stepping motion, lifting alternately the right and left of its foot on either side of a central groove (3). A large, opaque, crescentic, anterior pedal gland (4) exudes lubricating secretions from the bilaminate propodium-edge as it travels. Glands on either side of the sole also exude secretions.
Menai Strait. August 2013.
