34 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

34 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis

Young male L. fabalis with recently hatched juveniles.
On some shores, the white colour of hatchling L. fabalis is continued up to 4mm diameter on juveniles and resembles the 3.5mm diameter spiral tubes of spirorbid worms living with them on the fronds of Fucus serratus. With later growth of another colour, the juvenile shell is preserved as a pure white early spire, as in this image.
The spire of L. obtusata is often eroded to dingy whitish, though careful examination will often show traces of the eroded colour 35Dof 35 Differentiation L. obtusata/L. fabalis .
