Shell colour and banding very similar to S. umbilicalis, but bands tend to break into chequers on base and sometimes on rest of shell. Small constricted umbilicus on juveniles, closed on full grown adults.
Littoral and sublittoral, Channel Islands and Cherbourg to Spain; not British mainland (Few dubious records are probably misidentified S. umbilcalis).
