Blue rays survive on the juvenile growth at the summit. They sometimes continue onto adult growth, but frequently, as on this, they are entirely replaced by red-brown rays (mostly covered by epizoic growths when live).
On the interior, the peripheral zone is brown, but the area within the pedal-retractor-muscle scar is grey, which somewhat resembles Patella vulgata.
