Some Mediterranean specimens have distinctly yellow soles against which plentiful opaque spots show clearly.
As on Atlantic forms, the opercular lobes of Mediterranean specimens have some dark pigment proximally (1), but the pale distal parts of the opercular lobes are often dingy yellow (2) on Mediterranean specimens instead of the translucent whitish lobes on Atlantic individuals.
